Abstract:
Phytoplasma-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers were used to investigate putative phytoplasma infections in Protea species (Proteaceae), and to identify potential arthropod vectors.
PCR confirmed that witches' broom tissue (teratoma) was infected with a phytoplasma.
Phytophagous arthropods that yielded positive results were Aceria proteae (Acarina: Eriophyiidae), Proctolaelaps sp. (Acarina: Ascidae) and Oxycarenus maculatus (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae). The possible association of a phytoplasma with mites may be a previously undiscovered relationship.
