Abstract:
FOREWORD
The Sixth International Protea Working Group Research Symposium was held in conjunction with the 11th International Protea Conference, March 09-14, 2002 on Maui, Hawaii.
Protea researchers, growers, and marketers convened to strengthen their alliance through workshops, scientific presentations, and farm visits.
The stunning diversity among the Proteaceae emerged as an informal theme for the conference.
This theme was echoed in the diversity of the conference participants’ origins and interests.
Lively interactions focused on the conference’s underlying purpose—the advancement of protea in the international floriculture market.
These proceedings include most of the research papers presented at the conference. The papers explore various aspects of the propagation, cultivation, and post-harvest handling of protea, the development of new cultivars, and criteria for evaluating them. This volume complements the proceedings of the First through Fifth International Protea Conferences, also published by Acta Horticulturae.
I wish to extend my sincere thanks to all of the conference participants, to the authors who contributed to these Proceedings, and to the Scientific Committee for their input.
I am especially grateful to the staff of the Maui Agriculture Research Station, University of Hawai’i, and the Protea Growers Association of Hawai’i for organizing and sponsoring this conference.
With aloha,
Ken Leonhardt
Convener and Editor
