CHANGES IN ORGANIC NUTRIENTS OF SENESCING FUYU LEAVES AT TWO LOCATIONS DIFFERING IN THE TIME OF ABSCISSION

Abstract:
Fuyu (Diospyros kaki) leaves were collected from mid-August to early December at Chinju (35.2°N) and Cheju (33.2°N) orchards. Leaves in Chinju generally fall in early November right after the first frost, while those in Cheju do in early December. Seasonal changes in concentrations of leaf organic nutrients were compared to find if there were any significant differences in the pattern and extent of their changes. The most significant difference between Chinju and Cheju leaves was observed, especially in nonstructural carbohydrates, during the final 2 to 4-week period of leaf abscission. Soluble sugars and starch increased in Chinju leaves, while they decreased rapidly in Cheju leaves during this period. Concentrations of soluble sugars in abscised Chinju and Cheju leaves were 10.1% and 0.7%; those of starch were 6.0% and 3.4%, respectively. On the contrary, a rapid decline in amino acids as well as soluble proteins was observed in both Chinju and Cheju leaves. Concentrations of amino acids in abscised Chinju and Cheju leaves were 0.053% and 0.012%; those of proteins were 0.86% and 0.38%, respectively. Since leaf organic nutrients decreased most precipitously at around the initiation time of leaf abscission, the earlier loss of leaves in Chinju trees due to earlier frost resulted in a significant reduction of leaf nutrient mobilization and thus of reserve accumulation.
