Abstract:
Eleven local pollination constant astringent (PCA) Taiwanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.) varieties were evaluated for their tree and fruit characteristics. 'Suzchou', 'Niouhsin' and 'Shihshih' were the major commercial varieties used for soft, crisp and dry persimmons respectively. 'Fuyu' and' Jiro' are the leading pollination constant non-astringent (PCNA) persimmon varieties in the Taiwan middle elevation (600-1000M) area. 'Fuyu' had a narrower adaptation than ' Jiro', which could be cultivated in central Taiwan’s low elevation area.
Two PCNA type persimmon genotypes were selected from the progenies of 'Fuyu' hybridized with an unnamed, PCNA genotype that exhibited staminate flowers and had grown in the central Taiwan low elevation area since about 1940.
