APOMICTIC SEED FORMATION FROM INTER- AND INTRA- SPECIFIC CROSSES OF DIOSPYROS LOTUS |

| Abstract:
Most plants reproduce sexually through the fusion of reduced male and female gametes, but some species from seeds apomictically. Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki) shows normal seed formation, but asexual seed formation in some Diospyros species has been suggested. According to Nagai (1927), when female flowers of D. lotus (2n=2x=30) were pollinated with pollen of D. kaki (2n=2x=90), the resulting seedlings were morphologically identical to maternal parent, but he did not confirm whether they were produced sexually or asexually. Since then no further information has been reported. | |
