ISHS Acta Horticulturae 600: VIII International Controlled Atmosphere Research Conference

PREFACE

Authors:   ISHS Board of Directors, K. Oosterhaven, H. Peppelenbos, M. Strous
Abstract:
FOREWORD
It is our great pleasure that we can present, after an extensive period of selection and review, the proceedings of the 8th International Controlled Atmosphere Research Conference (CA2001). The conference was held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, from 8 till 13 July 2001 and the Agrotechnological Research Institute (ATO) from Wageningen, The Netherlands, was the organiser of this conference.
It was the first time that the conference was organised under the flag of ISHS and, therefore, the proceedings of this conference are published in the Acta Horticulturae series. This enables a good distribution of and access to the scientific progress in controlled atmosphere research.
This CA conference-series is the only conference that deals with CA-technology, in all its aspects. The conference is one of the few opportunities where postharvest industry can interact with postharvest scientists in an informative and informal way. Key note speakers guided the audience in many important controlled atmosphere topics, amongst others Controlled Atmosphere technology, Modified Atmosphere Packaging, physiological response and disorders, modelling of quality, sensor technology, disinfestation, nutritional value, logistics, and so on.
About 300 participants, coming from 50 countries all over the world, listened to 80 oral presentations, could read the research progress on 150 posters and discuss it with the responsible scientists. Furthermore, during the conference several companies showed their latest technologies in the trade exposition. A two-days post-conference tour enabled participants to envisage modern post-harvest sites in the Netherlands, in the port of Rotterdam, fruit auction The Fruitmasters and the Wageningen University and Research Centre.
The presentations and posters of CA2001 are published after peer review. Not all orals and posters are present in this Acta; some authors have withdrawn their contributions.
The 9th International Controlled Atmosphere Research Conference will be held in 2005, in Michigan, USA, under the auspices of Michigan State University (chairman will be Prof. R. Beaudry).
We do want to thank several contributors who supported CA2001 financially. We have to thank the ISHS for their assistance in organising the conference and publishing the proceedings. Furthermore, we thank all authors, the reviewers and in particular Dr. Ernst Woltering and Miriam Strous for their valuable contribution, their time and tremendous effort in the process of preparing this proceedings.

The organisers,
Koos Oosterhaven (Chairman)
Herman Peppelenbos (Vice chairman)
Miriam Strous (Secretary)

PREFACE
This volume of Acta Horticulturae is the Proceedings of the 8th International Controlled Atmosphere Conference. Invited and keynote speakers and selected authors of offered oral papers and posters had the opportunity to submit their manuscripts for publication in this volume of the series Acta Horticulturae.
Submitted manuscripts were reviewed by the Editors and Members of the Editorial Board and amended according to the referee suggestions prior to acceptance.
The ISHS acknowledges the cooperation received from the Editors on reviewing the manuscripts which was a significant contribution to the overall quality of the publication.

The ISHS Board of Directors

INTRODUCTION
On behalf of Dr. Chris Brickell, President, and the Board of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), I welcome you all here to this magnificent venue in Rotterdam, to the 8th International Controlled Atmosphere Conference. I know that we will have an exciting and productive meeting as we listen to the latest information on this important postharvest technology and as we meet old friends and make new ones.
This is a landmark Conference for two reasons. First this will be the first time that this CA meeting has been held outside the North American continent. Since the first CA Conference held at Michigan State University in 1959, organised by one of the legends of postharvest storage technology, Professor D. Dewey, others have been held at venues around the USA at 4 yearly intervals. They have increasingly become of international significance attracting scientists from all major continents. However, the shift from the USA makes it possible for graduate students and business people from Europe to become involved in this valuable experience.
Second this will be the first time that this CA Conference has been held under the auspices of the ISHS. We welcome this move as a further initiative to bring benefits to our ISHS colleagues who are members of the Postharvest Commission. Of particular importance and significance is the fact that the proceedings of this Conference will be published in the Acta Horticulturae series. This means that the results of your work will potentially be available to a much wider reader base than has been the case hitherto, where distribution of the published proceedings has been done on a more ad hoc and limited basis, without the benefit of an international distribution system.
In addition by including this CA Conference within the suite of scientific meetings held under the auspices of the ISHS, it strengthens our overall activities of our Commission. It does so by extending our schedule of regular activities, by creating the opportunity for broadening the range of scientific disciplines to meet regularly under this ISHS umbrella, and providing more benefits to the financial member of the ISHS.
Food safety and food security are important global issues currently. Too many people on our planet die of starvation and malnutrition every year. Political, economic and cultural reasons may exist for the unequal distribution of food throughout the world and particularly to those in dire need. As postharvest scientists and technologists we can be proud of the achievements made by our predecessors and by our colleagues, many of whom are in the audience today. We will continue to take pride in the achievements of the young generation of scientists who are presenting their research results at this conference for the first time.
It is appropriate that this Conference should be taking place in a country that has made many substantial contributions to the technology and science of CA. We are all most grateful to the companies and institutions who are involved in sponsoring this meeting; it is critically important that the links between scientists and commercial companies be enhanced to ensure that the positive outcomes of this exciting technology is made available for the benefit of all.
On your behalf I want to thank Dr. Koos Oosterhaven and his Organising Committee for all the hard work they have undertaken to make this Conference a reality. It is now up to you the participants to make it an outstanding success.

So participate fully, make new friends and acquaintances, and above all have fun.

Errol W. Hewett
Chair, Postharvest Commission ISHS
