ISHS Acta Horticulturae 60: Symposium on Breeding and Machine Harvesting of Rubus and Ribes

THE TESTING OF RUBUS AND RIBES CULTIVARS FOR COMMERCIAL GROWING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

Author:   P.J. Woodward
Abstract:
The most important of the Ribes cultivars grown in the United Kingdom is the black currant and the most important Rubus is the raspberry. Approximately 65 per cent of the black currant crop and 90 per cent of the raspberry crop are processed. The other Ribes cultivars like gooseberry and red and white currants and Rubus cultivars like the loganberry and blackberry are also largely used in processing.

Table 1 - Relative importance of Rubus and Ribes cultivars grown in the United Kingdom.

  Area under cultivation in hectares
  1964 1974
RUBUS
Raspberries 3413 4284
    (3392 in Scotland)
Loganberries 431 509
RIBES
Black Currants 6500 3978
Gooseberries 2289 1283
Red and White Currants  265  278

Black Currants are used principally for juice extraction and jam manufacture but also for canning, yoghourt and freezing. Raspberries go mainly into preserves with lesser quantities being used for yoghourt flavours, canning and freezing. The needs of the fresh fruit market for both fruits plays an important but minor role in any fruit testing.
