POLLINATION AND FRUIT SET IN RASPBERRIES

Author:   G. Redalen
Abstract:
The red raspberry cultivars Norna and Asker, and the selection II-2LGP were pollinated by several pollinators. Norma gave a low set of berries and drupelets after selfing compared to cross pollination. It had also a lower fruit set in general than the other cultivars.

The best pollinators were Preussen, Malling Jewel and Glen Clova, while the fruit set in general was low with Asker, Lloyd George and the selections 13/182 and Norex 8 as pollinators.

Emasculation reduced fruit set in open pollinated flowers of Norna. Flowers of this cultivar had to a relatively high degree retained its ability to set when open pollinated within three days after isolation and emasculation. After six days the set was very low.

Number of styles and pollen germination was compared for 13 cultivars. The average was 100 styles per flower, and 74 per cent of the pollen grains were able to germinate. Norex 8, Preussen and Norna had the largest number of styles, while Asker had the lowest. The highest per cent germinated pollen was obtained for Glen Clova while Norna, Norex 8 and Asker had lower germination ability.
