Abstract:
The papers which follow were given at a Symposium on the Breeding and Machine Harvesting of R u b u s and R i b e s fruits, organised jointly by the Fruit Group of Eucarpia and the International Society for Horticultural Science, and held at East Malling Research Station and the Scottish Horticultural Research Institute from 14 to 22 July, 1976. Twenty visitors from overseas, representing 11 countries, took part, and 43 members of United Kingdom organisations attended some or all of the meetings.
In view of rapid developments taking place in the machine harvesting and breeding of those fruits, the Group recommended that a further meeting be held in four year's time, and that this meeting should include visits to Corvallis, Oregon, U.S.A.; Puyallup, Washington, U.S.A.; and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
It was recommended that Dr.
H.A. Daubeny (British Columbia) should act as Chairman, that Drs.
B.H. Barritt of Puyallup and F.J. Lawrence of Corvallis should form the Working Party, and that Dr.
D.L. Jennings should act as a deputy chairman to represent European members.
It was further recommended that the Working Party should consider the feasibility of including Strawberry work in the next meeting, and also that it should discuss with the Blueberry Working Party the desirability of a combined or sequential meeting dealing with Blueberries; there would be no advantage in including Ribes, as no work on this genus is being done in the United States or Canada.
In addition to the formal proceedings reported, members took the opportunity to discuss germplasm conservation, and the Chairman was asked to inform the U.S. National Plant Germplasm Committee of the members' interest in its work and their desire to co-operate in the establishment of germplasm conservation and exchange on an International basis.
D.L. Jennings,
Symposium Chairman
