DATA COLLECTION SYSTEMS

Author:   E.S. TRICKETT
Abstract:
In this paper an attempt has been made to summarise some of the factors which influence the choice of an automatic data collection system. A plea is made for a realistic long term attitude towards the purchase of equipment for research involving the measurement of environmental factors. The strip chart recorder is seen as an interim answer to the problem of data storage and one which should now be replaced, in favour of a medium which can if desired be fed direct to a programmed computer. Drawing up a logic flowsheet from which a programme can be written is seen as a logical part of the design of experiments. The purchase of equipment to permit full exploitation of such an approach is seen as an economic problem. Solution of this problem depends largely on improved communications between research workers and those responsible for the disbursement of funds.
