THE COMMERCIAL EXTRACTION OF CARBON DIOXIDE FROM BOILER FLUE GASES FOR GLASSHOUSE USE |

| Abstract:
In spring 1963 Framptons Nurseries Ltd. decided to investigate the possibilities of extracting Carbon Dioxide from flue gases for glasshouse use as a substitute for propane and solid CO2 on a commercial scale. Existing flue gas scrubbing equipment was hired and experimental cropping programmes laid down. The equipment arrived much too late to be of any significant use for these crops, but it was possible to demonstrate that an effective supply of clean gas is obtainable at a highly attractive price. Development work on the equipment proved unpractical in the existing circumstances. Since it was now known that this is a potentially practical method, a second manufacturer was approached, but the case was identical. It is difficult to state clearly reasons for failure, but it is probably true to state that they were organizational rather than commercial and technical. It is our earnest wish that someone from the horticultural research organizations will take this up. Such information as we have will be freely available. This report is not offered as a scientific paper, but as food for thought and a challenge. | |
