ISHS Acta Horticulturae 596: VIII International Symposium on Pear

THE PEAR INDUSTRY IN ASIA

Author:   H. Gemma
Keywords:   Pyrus spp., production, trade, Asia
Abstract:
Pear production in Asia has progressively increased in the last 10 years, especially in China, Korea, Turkey, India, and Iran. Expansion is due to a combination of high profitability, increasing consumer demand, and improvement in technology. Recently, it has been possible to grow pear in tropical highlands and in tropical and sub-tropical regions with the development of annual grafting of flower buds exposed to chilling temperature sufficient to break dormancy. However, the majority of tropical Asian countries are restricted in pear production because of climatic factors.
