Abstract:
Seed stratification of Pyrus syriaca Boiss. for 30, 60, or 90 days improved germination but seed treatment with 500 or 1000 ppm gibberellin (GA3) dips did not further increase germination of stratified seed.
Terminal, median, and basal stem cuttings collected in January, July, August, September, and December did not root with or without indolebutryric acid (IBA) dips.
Anatomical studies of stems revealed the presence of several continuous rings of short, isodiametric stone cells called brachysclereids suggesting that sclerification may account for the lack of rooting.
Bud and basal segment extracts showed a significant inhibitory rooting influence based on the mung bean bioassay.
Basal segment extracts bioassayed 10 or 20 days after placing the cuttings in rooting beds showed a significant promotive rooting influence.
