Abstract:
The Chinese pear varieties (Pyrus serotina) are not common in Romanian pear orchards.
Excepting the presence in some experimental fields and collections, these varieties are practically unknown.
With the goal of introducing new fruit types into the Romanian pear assortment, we studied the behaviour of four Chinese pear varieties: Dong Guo Li, Su Li, Ya Li and Xue Hua Li.
Using the under bark (rind grafting) method, the Chinese varieties were over grafted on “in vitro” propagated European pear (Pyrus communis). The rootstock was planted at 5 x 1 m spacings and after the grafting, specific pruning to form a Tatura Trellis canopy was done.
In the fourth year after grafting, the most vigorous variety was Xue Hua Li, followed by Su Li.
Dong Guo Li variety had the lowest vigour. ‘Ya Li’ formed a large number of flowering brindles (shoots 15–25cm long with lateral vegetative buds and one terminal flowering bud), while the other varieties formed constantly spurs and dards (short shoots with a terminal flowering bud). The most productive variety was Su Li followed by Ya Li, Xue Hua Li and Dong Guo Li.
The annual yield increment, between the second year after grafting and the fourth one, varied from 33.5% to 72.22%. The four Chinese pear varieties had a good resistance to scab (Venturia pirina), pear white spot (Mycosphaerella sentina) and pests (Psylla sp.). The results obtained showed that the Chinese varieties studied found good conditions for growing and bearing fruits in the Bucuresti Area.
Tatura Trellis was an appropriate canopy system that permits an efficient use of incident light by the leaves in the peripheral canopy of mentioned varieties.
The genetic resistance to some important pear pests and diseases and the good yield level suggest that the varieties Su Li, Ya Li and Xue Hua Li should be useful as parents for the future breeding programmes.
