Abstract:
In the Po Valley, intensive pear orchards are grown mostly on quince rootstocks, for the beneficial effects they impart to tree'’ performance.
However, graft incompatibility with same cultivars and poor adaptation to soils represent strong hindrances to the use of quince.
A program was initiated at CIV in 1992, to select P. communis rootstocks with size control comparable to quince.
Starting from about 10,000 open-pollinated seedlings, 32 lines have been selected for several positive traits.
These have been advanced to further evaluation of both nursery attributes and vegetative/productive traits in the orchard.
