ISHS Acta Horticulturae 596: VIII International Symposium on Pear

ACHIEVEMENTS IN BREEDING OF ROMANIAN CLONAL PEAR ROOTSTOCKS

Author:   C. Mazilu
Keywords:   genotype, biotype, softwood cuttings, hybridization, vigour, graf compatibility
Abstract:
At the Fruit Research Institute Pitesti-Maracineni a new breeding programme for clonal pear rootstocks was initiated in 1990. The 6 breeding goals have been easy vegetative propagation, low vigour, good graft compatibility with valuable pear varieties, tolerance to pests and diseases. Following this research work, eight pear genotypes (controlled and open pollination) and six quince biotypes (selection of wild and cultivated flora) have been developed which satisfy some of the breeding goals and these have been employed as vegetative pear rootstocks.
