Abstract:
Pear production is a minor part of fruit production in Northern Europe, between 5 and 15% of pome fruits.
Recently, the cultivated area has been declining, but in some areas pear orchards are managed quite efficiently.
Northern Europe imports pears both from Mediterranean countries and from the Southern Hemisphere.
Breeding has been limited, mainly in the Netherlands, the UK, and Germany.
