Abstract:
There are five natural Pyrus species in the different communities of Hungarian flora.
All wild pear species were a component of old Hungarian cultivated pear.
After 1526, many cultivars from Hungary migrated to The Netherlands, France, and Germany.
The indigenous Hungarian species include: P. pyraster (L.) Burgs ssp. pyraster L. and ssp. achras (Gaertn.) Stohr., P. nivalis Jacq., P. salvifolia DC, P. austriaca Kern., and the endemic P. magyarica Terpó. Spontaneous hybrids include two types as infrequent taxons: P. mecsekensis Terpó and P. kárpátiana Terpó.
