Abstract:
Production of European pear (Pyrus communis) for fresh market is increasing in Japan.
Pear cultivars with high quality in early season and mid-season are needed to increase the consumption of pears. More than 100 cultivars are conserved in the Apple Research Center, National Institute of Fruit Tree Science (NIFTS). The fruit quality of 65 pear cultivars was evaluated in 1989-1993. Promising cultivars suited to Japanese fresh market are ‘Aurora’, ‘Marguerite Marillat’, and ‘General Leclerc’. ‘Aurora’ ripens in early September, has outstanding fruit quality among early cultivars, keeps well in cold storage but tends to alternate hearing. ‘Aurora’ could replace ‘Bartlett’ in Japan. ‘Marguerite Marillat’, a triploid, could be grown as an early-mid season cultivar. ‘General Leclerc’ is a high quality mid-season cultivar but is susceptible to ring rot.
