Abstract:
The University of Bologna pear breeding program started in 1978. The main goals were: i) diversify and improve pear quality and time of ripening; ii) red skin colour; iii) resistance to Cacopsylla pyri and to Erwinia amylovora (fire blight); iiii) hybridisation between Pyrus communis and Nashi to find new pear type for the fresh market. This paper deals only with comparing the progeny traits of some crosses between Pyrus and Nashi: fruit weight; diametric ratio; firmness; sugar (°Brix). The first collected data, analysed through the figurative box plot test, show a weak dominance of early fruiting and fruit quality traits of Nashi compared to European pears.
