Abstract:
World-wide European pear breeding programmes are reviewed, including major objectives for the development of new cultivars, progresses and recently achieved results.
Particular attention is given to resistance to the most dangerous pests and diseases, adaptability to environmental factors; tree vigour control, self-fertility, extension of the harvesting period, and improvement of fruit quality and storage life.
