ISOENZYMIC POLYMORPHISM IN PEAR

Authors:   A.G. Manganaris, C.G. Tsipouridis
Keywords:   Pyrus communis, cultivars, electrophoresis, cultivar identification
Abstract:
Isoenzymic polymorphism was examined among 43 pear cultivars and selections using both acrylamide and starch gels. All the 18 examined enzymes showed polymorphism, the most informative of them being phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and glucose phosphate isomerase (PGI). On the basis of the recorded polymorphism all 43 cultivars could be distinguished individually. The Greek cultivar ‘Krystalli’ and its synonymous ‘Blanquilla’ (Spanish origin) were found identical, while their putative synonymous ‘Spadona Estiva’ (Italian origin) was different. These results show the potential use of electrophoresis for distinguishing cultivars in the nursery during the winter using bark and its inability to distinguish clones of the same cultivar.
