Abstract:
This paper provides a comparative and an evolutionary overview of the world-wide pear industry.
Seven macro-areas and some 60 pear-producing countries are analysed taking into account the main indicators related to production and trade and covering a time period of ten years (1990-1999), while future perspectives of pear production are given considering the time series 1961-2004. World pear production has increased rapidly over the last decade due to increases in China but it has been stable in Southern Europe, and Oceania, and it is decreasing in Eastern and Central Europe.
Forecasts anticipate world production to continue to increase on balance but results will be mixed in different areas.
