CHEMICAL THINNING IN NASHI

Authors:   S.A. Bound, Mitchell
Keywords:   ammonium thiosulphate, Culminate, Pyrus pyrifolia, fruit set, crop load
Abstract:
Trials were conducted in the Goulburn Valley region of Australia over a two year period to examine the effect of the desiccating chemical ammonium thiosulphate (Culminate™) as a blossom thinner of Nashi pears. A replicated small plot field trial was established on a commercial orchard in year one. Four rates (0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% or 2.0%) of Culminate were examined at three different stages during the flowering period (20%, 50% or 80% bloom). Culminate has potential as a blossom thinner of Nashi pears. The most consistent thinning across both crop load variables was achieved with 2.0% v/v Culminate at 50 or 80% bloom. Fruit size was improved by 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% applications at 50 or 80% bloom.
