ISHS Acta Horticulturae 596: VIII International Symposium on Pear

THE NASHI INDUSTRY IN JAPAN

Author:   H. Gemma
Keywords:   Pyrus pyrifolia, production, breeding, protected cultivation, growing
Abstract:
The term nashi has been accepted in the world for fruits of Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai. ‘Nijisseiki’, one of the popular nashi cultivars in Japan, was first exported to USA and European countries in 1983. At present, commercial nashi production and area is declining due to a shortage of labor. Attempts are underway in Japan to introduce new cultivars and to cultivate nashi under protected cultivation using plastic-film houses.
