Abstract:
In 1993 the Ministry for Agricultural and Forestry Policy financed two national research programs on fruit crops.
The two programs, named “Fruit growing” and “List of recommended fruit varieties”, are coordinated by the Istituto Sperimentale per la Frutticoltura (ISF) and involve Universities, Regional experimental stations and Fruitgrower associations.
The aim of the program “Recommended fruit varieties” is the horticultural evaluation of all the new cultivars and rootstocks commercialised in Italy, according to a common protocol, in the different fruit areas of the country and the compilation of a list of recommended varieties for the growers.
Among the about 100 apple varieties under test, several are scab resistant and, among them, the following have been evaluated positively (Florina) and promising (Summerfree, Topaz, Golden Lasa, Primiera, Golden Orange, Delorina, Enterprise, GoldRush) for commercial growing.
The program “Fruit growing” is mainly based on breeding for pest resistance of the main fruit crops, including apple.
The main objective for apple is scab resistance and three units are involved: Bologna University, Istituto Sperimentale Frutticoltura Trento, Istituto Sperimentale Frutticoltura Forlì. Up to now the following scab resistant cultivars have been released: Summerfree, Red Earlib, Golden Lasa, Golden Orange, Golden Mira, Nova, Brina, Netta, Ciosa.
