ISHS Acta Horticulturae 594: International Symposium on Foliar Nutrition of Perennial Fruit Plants

EFFECT OF FOLIAR TREATMENTS OF MAGNESIUM, MANGANESE, AND ZINC ON GRAFTED VINES IN THE NURSERY

Author:   G. Moretti
Keywords:   microelement, dose, grafting combination, foliar nutrition
Abstract:
Two grafting combinations characterized by differing capacities for rooting and shoot lignification (Pinot Bianco/Kober 5BB and Cabernet Sauvignon/41 B) were treated in the nursery with foliar applications of MgSO4, MnSO4, or ZnSO4. Sprays were applied at two concentrations (10 and 30 ppm) when the shoots reached the length of 20 cm, and at one, two or three repetitions at 15-day intervals. Shoot length and diameter at the grafting point were measured at the time of each spray application and at the end of the growing season (third week of September). Yield of marketable grafted vines, root number, plant weight, and leaf Mg, Mn and Zn concentrations were measured. The trial was repeated over three years in Rauscedo (PN), North-Eastern Italy. Foliar applications of Mg and Zn were useful in promoting shoot length and lignification, and in increasing root number. Treatment with Mn at the highest level decreased the yield of rooted vines. The effect of the treatments was not evident on all the parameters measured; however, applications repeated twice or three times had a generally better overall effect on grafted vine quality.
