ISHS Acta Horticulturae 594: International Symposium on Foliar Nutrition of Perennial Fruit Plants

GROWTH OF SEEDLING ROOTSTOCKS OF GEVUINA AVELLANA MOL. BY SOIL AND FOLIAR FERTILIZATION

Authors:   F. Medel, G. Medel
Keywords:   Chile nut, rootstocks
Abstract:
The genetic improvement programme of Gevuina avellana Mol., a Chilean evergreen tree, has developed high productive and quality clones of edible nuts. These clones, in a process of certification, are propagated by tissue culture and cuttings. With the objective to adapt the plants to different condition of soils, budding and grafting operations are important. These methods need vigorous seedling rootstocks in a short time, with a stem diameter that produce a good scion growth. For this aim, several field trials were carried out at Valdivia (Chile) in a three-year period (1999-2001), in a temperate oceanic climate and «Trumao» soils, derivated from volcanic ashes. The fertilizers were applied in single, multiple solid and foliar nutrient forms, in different rates and times, to seedlings rootstocks in the first and second year of growth. Foliar fertilization was better than soil fertilization for this purpose, without depressing effects on proteoid clusters roots, and minimizing nutrient inputs.
