ISHS Acta Horticulturae 593: IV International Symposium on Models for Plant Growth and Control in Greenhouses: Modeling for the 21st Century - Agronomic and Greenhouse Crop Models

MODELLING PERIODIC PLANT GROWTH USING SINE AND COSINE FUNCTIONS

Authors:   R.U. Larsen, A. Kosiba
Keywords:   Crop model, rhythmic growth, leaf unfolding, shoot elongation, plant development, Codiaeum sp., Quercus sp.
Abstract:
A method for dynamically simulating plant growth using cosine and sine functions is presented. The functions are described both in the derivative and integrated form. In the study, the integrated model was fitted to growth data from previously published studies. The model gave a good fit to data of leaf unfolding in Codiaeum grown in climate chambers, while the fit was not as good for shoot elongation in Quercus. This may partly be due to the fact that the oak plants were not grown under controlled climate conditions. The advantages and disadvantages with using this type of model are discussed, together with the mathematical linkage between growth and development.
