Abstract:
Prunus davidiana (Carr.) is a wild species related to peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch), which has been used as a source of resistance to pests and diseases in peach breeding programs. However, P. davidiana has non-edible fruits with small fruit size and bitter taste. We described some biochemical components of fruit quality parameters in two genotypes of P. davidiana and compared them to three genotypes of P. persica (‘Summergrand’ a commercial variety, and ‘Bailey’ and ‘Pamirskij’ two peach rootstocks) and two persica x davidiana hybrids. The genotypes were grown outdoors in 30 L pots and fruits were harvested at maturity. The flesh of P. davidiana fruits presented a high concentration in total organic acids, total amino acids, and total caffeoylquinic acids, and low soluble sugar concentrations. ‘Summergrand’ had high soluble sugar concentration. ‘Bailey’ had intermediate concentration in total caffeoylquinic acids. ‘Pamirskij’ had high soluble sugar concentration and low total caffeoylquinic acid concentration. The P. persica x P. davidiana hybrids had intermediate values between their parents for the sum of caffeoylquinic acids. They were more similar to the P. persica parent for total soluble sugars, organic acids, and amino acids. The biochemical components of flesh quality were also determined in fruit epidermis. The metabolic origin of the biochemical differences observed needs to be determined, and their genetic origin could be studied using progeny of P. persica x P davidiana hybrids.
