ISHS Acta Horticulturae 592: V International Peach Symposium

NEW TYPES OF HIGH QUALITY PEACHES: FLAT PEACHES (P. PERSICA VAR. PLATICARPA) AND GHIACCIO PEACH SERIES WITH LONG ON TREE FRUIT LIFE

Authors:   A. Nicotra, L. Conte, L. Moser, P. Fantechi
Keywords:   flat peaches, Ghiaccio peaches, high quality peaches
Abstract:
Six flat peach varieties and three varieties of a new type of peach were originated by a breeding programme whose aim was to obtain high quality peaches. The flat peach varieties, ripening from 43 to 2 days before 'Redhaven,' are attractive for shape, colour and size. They could continuously provide the markets for a period of about 50 days, actually being the only flat varieties ripening in this period. The three Ghiaccio varieties are white-cream, with a very high sugar content and a very firm white flesh, similar but not equal to the flesh of peach for canning. The Ghiaccios can remain ripe on the tree for a period of 20 - 25 days without losing flesh firmness or changing sugar content, skin or flesh colour.
