Abstract:
This study was carried out on a collection of seventeen male pistachio-tree specimens located in the central area of Tunisia.
The evaluation of male pistachio-tree features was made during two years (1998-1999) based on the flowering period, flower density and the quantity of pollen per inflorescence in order to find the best pollinator for ‘Mateur’, the most widely cultivated pistachio cultivar in Tunisia.
The phenological observations have shown three groups of male pistachio-trees.
The first group has an early flowering period, which started 15 days before the female cultivar.
This group was characterized by the best pollen production of 0.52 g per inflorescence.
The second group covers the major part of 'Mateur' flowering period.
However, it has a medium to weak density and the lowest pollen production (0.30 g). The third group with a late flowering period has a good density and pollen production (0.44 g). These results are discussed and the best pollination combination for ‘Mateur’ is suggested.
