THE FORMATION OF NUT PRODUCTION ZONES IN GREECE: AN APPLICATION OF THE CLUSTER ANALYSIS

Authors:   E. Tsakiridou, K. Mattas, K. Galanopoulos
Keywords:   nut production, Greece, analysis.
Abstract:
This paper aims to identify the distribution of nut production in Greece throughout the country’s 13 districts (NACE II classification). Cluster analysis is implemented and common groups among the prefectures are formed in order to trace similarities and differences regarding the production of three different nuts (almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts). Variables such as volume of production, cultivated area, yield as well as a production trend variable for each nut are used. Results obtained indicate how the commonly grouped regions affect the volume of nut production, and therefore, how considerable the formation/development of production zones is for each category of nuts.
