Abstract:
Complete monogenic resistance toward Erwinia amylovora is not observed among cultivated Maloideae. On the contrary resistance seems to be polygenic, of complex nature and relying probably on diverse constitutive or inducible defense mechanisms. Therefore, control of the disease in susceptible genotypes through the elicitation of such defense mechanisms seems to be a pertinent approach. Diverse elicitors of biotic or abiotic nature are being made available either commercially or experimentally. In this context, the level and some characteristics of the protection of apple and/or pear obtained with some of them (Bion, GL32, Apogee, avirulent hrp mutants) have been studied. In addition, the induction of defense mechanisms was revealed in leaves of treated plants. Results showed that a potential for defense against E. amylovora exists even in susceptible genotypes of apple and pear. This potential may be activated by diverse elicitors.
