ISHS Acta Horticulturae 590: IX International Workshop on Fire Blight

THE PEPTIDE ANTIBIOTIC PRODUCED BY PANTOEA AGGLOMERANS EH252 IS A MICROCIN

Abstract:
Pantoea agglomerans (Erwinia herbicola) strain Eh252, originally selected for its ability to limit the incidence of fire blight in apple orchards, is one of few bacterial strains used as a biological control agent of fire blight for which production of a secondary metabolite has been shown to be involved in the control of the disease (Vanneste, 1996). The secondary metabolite produced by Eh252 inhibits all the strains of Erwinia amylovora, the fire blight pathogen, that were tested. Tn5-induced mutants of Eh252 which do not produce this secondary metabolite, such as 10:12, were shown to be less efficient than Eh252 in controlling fire blight on immature pear fruit in the laboratory (Vanneste et al., 1992), on apple blossom in controlled environmental chambers (Vanneste, 1996) and on apple and pear flowers in orchards (V.O. Stockwell pers. comm.). Mutants which were restored for their ability to produce this metabolite were also restored for their ability to protect immature pear fruit against fire blight (Vanneste and Yu, 1996).
