ISHS Acta Horticulturae 59: IV International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants

VIRUS DISEASES OF SOME ORNAMENTAL AND INDIGENOUS TREES AND SHRUBS IN BRITAIN

Author:   J.B. Sweet
Abstract:
Apple chlorotic leafspot virus was detected in Chaenomeles japonica Lindl. and in hedgerow Crataegus oxyacantha Jacq. plants. Prunus necrotic ringspot virus was detected in five ornamental Prunus spp. and in hedgerow Prunus spinosa L. plants.

The incidence of strawberry latent ringspot virus (SLRV) in standard roses was associated with the source of the Rosa rugosa Thunb. rootstock. Virus tested material remained free of SLRV when grown on a commercial nursery.

Raspberry ringspot virus (RRV) was isolated from two Daphne spp. and from two Forsythia spp. The isolates seemed to have more affinity to the English strain of RRV. All tested isolates of arabis mosaic virus found in hardy ornamentals were closely related to the AB10 strain and rose isolates of SLRV appeared to be similar.

Poplar mosaic virus was eliminated by heat therapy from some poplar clones. The feasability of a scheme to produce selected virus-tested clones of a range of trees and shrubs is discussed.
