ALLELOPATHY IN ASPARAGUS 1: REDUCTION OF THE ALLELOPATHIC EFFECT ON ASPARAGUS BY THE FLOWABLE AGENT IN ACTIVATED CARBON

Abstract:
In Nagano Prefecture, Japan, asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) is grown on 1,930 hectares (1999). Approximately 200 hectares in Nagano Prefecture is now being replanting. When asparagus is planted in a field where it has been grown before, there are often lower yields and greater loss of young plants. One of the causes of these phenomena is allelopathy. In this study, we examined the effect of the flowable agent in activated carbon (herein referred to as "activated carbon F") to mitigate allelopathy in asparagus. The results of tests on lettuce as an assay plant and one-year-old asparagus showed that activated carbon F acts to mitigate allelopathy and promote growth in asparagus. In all 3 areas where local adaptability was examined, the growth of asparagus was improved as measured by the weight of the rhizome and storage roots, the number of storage roots, the growth of plants and GI' (growth index) in plots treated with activated carbon F (using a 25 to 100-fold dilution) compared to non-treated plots. It can be concluded that activated carbon F is effective in mitigating the allelopathy of asparagus in the field.
