EFFECT OF AUTOTOXICITY ON THE GROWTH OF CLONED ASPARAGUS PLANTS

Author:   B.L. Benson
Keywords:   Asparagus, autotoxicity, allelopathy, clones, leachate, growth
Abstract:
Cloned asparagus plants that were irrigated with the leached nutrient solutions from plants of the same clone or other clones, produced fewer shoots than plants that were irrigated with fresh nutrient solutions. No significant differences were found in the number of shoots produced from cloned plants that were irrigated with leached nutrient solutions from the plants of the same clone or from plants of a different clone. These finding support earlier work on the water solubility of the autotoxic/allelopathic compound produced in the crowns and roots of the asparagus plant.
