Abstract:
The initiation pattern and morphological structures of asparagus buds were investigated using ‘Mary Washington 500W’ and ‘Welcome’. The initiation pattern was classified as Type A, Type B and Type C. After the first group initiated 5-6 small buds three months after sowing, the second group of buds initiated 3-4 buds at one part (Type A), two parts (Type B) and three parts (Type C) of the first group and these buds increased afterwards in one way, two ways and three ways, respectively.
Thereafter, a group of 5-6 buds were also initiated in the initiation axils but sprouting did not occur during winter.
The buds sprouted in spring developed into spears either one, two or three directions.
The buds developed in the initiation axils were vigorous and increased in size.
On the other hand, buds on the opposite side did not develop or increase in number.
