Abstract:
Asparagus cultivars were evaluated for yield, quality and growth characteristics at two locations in Utah.
Replicated trials of commonly planted US varieties were established in 1992 and selected varieties from various international sources were planted in 1996. Spears were harvested, weighted, trimmed to 23 cm and graded beginning in 1994 and 1998 for the two trials, respectively.
Cultivars developed in the US with the highest productivity include Jersey Giant, Jersey Gem, Greenwich, Atlas, and Grande.
Cultivars from international sources with high productivity include Gynlim, Grolim, CRAS 22, CRAS 29, and Taramea.
Cultivars with high productivity appear adapted to the cold winters and hot dry summers common to the Inter-mountain region of the Western US. Aspects of adaptability to Utah's unique climatic conditions will be discussed.
