EFFECTIVE FIELD EVALUATION OF ASPARAGUS HYBRIDS USING REDUCED DATA COLLECTION

Abstract:
Several strategies were compared to reduce the frequency of measurements necessary to obtain reliable estimates of yield and quality from asparagus trials. Data collected over periods ranging from three to six harvest seasons, three days a week from four different trials conducted at the University of California, Riverside were sampled selectively to represent reduced data collection. Results from the Monday-Wednesday-Friday data collection were compared with Monday-only, Wednesday-only, and Friday-only data collection. The Monday-only sampling had the highest correlations with the full data set (0.95 when averaged over nine yield and quality traits and all trials), followed by the Wednesday-only sampling (0.93) and the Friday-only sampling (0.91). Among the single-day samplings, Monday-only sampling had the highest F-test values for 20 of the 32 trial x trait combinations examined. Although the spears still must be cut at least three days a week, a Monday-only data collection scheme represents a timesaving advantage without sacrificing much information.
