FLESH PIGMENTATION IN YELLOW-ORANGE CUCUMBERS: DEVELOPMENTAL CHANGES AND INHERITANCE

Authors:   Y. Sakata, M. Sugiyama, M. Morishita
Keywords:   Cucumis sativus, β-carotene
Abstract:
beta-carotene content in pickling cucumbers EOM 400 and EOM 402 was evaluated 7, 20, and 40 days after pollination. As originally reported, the cucumbers’ flesh was pigmented and contained beta-carotene at immature stages; the content was approximately two to three times that of ordinary cucumbers. The beta-carotene content changed during development; the pattern of change varied among accessions. The beta-carotene content in progeny from a cross of pigmented EOM 402 and non-pigmented Si-ye suggests that beta-carotene accumulation is a quantative trait.
