PEST CONTROL OF JAPANESE PEAR BY GROUND STATIONARY SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

Abstract:
Two kinds of ground stationary sprinkler systems, the swing sprinkler and the dimerism rotary sprinkler, were developed for pest control of Japanese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai var. culta Nakai), and the performance in pear orchards and the efficacy on pests were evaluated. The swing sprinkler operates shaking a nozzle, while a body is rotated using water pressure. The dimerism rotary sprinkler operates a rotation of nozzle and a body using battery power. Non-uniformity of deposit of water applied by ground stationary sprinklers was observed on a surface of pear leaves, however, performance of the ground stationary sprinklers showed some improvement over the conventional overhead sprinklers. The efficacy on pests by pesticides application using ground stationary sprinklers was almost equivalent to a conventional speed sprayer, but was inferior in controlling certain pests such as mealybugs or spider mites. Therefore, supplemental pesticide spraying by hand, etc. is necessary. Nevertheless, ground stationary sprinkler systems seem to be an efficient method for laborsaving of pesticide spraying work, since sprinklers cover a wide area in a short period of time. In addition, this pesticide application method is safe since operators do not need to enter orchards, and the sprinkler systems can be used for not only pest control but also irrigation in multipurpose.
