ISHS Acta Horticulturae 587: International Symposium on Asian Pears, Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Nijisseiki Pear

A GRAFT-TRANSMISSIBLE DISEASE "SOHI-BYO" OF JAPANESE PEAR THAT OCCURS IN OKAYAMA PREFECTURE, JAPAN

Authors:   H. Nasu, H. Osaki
Keywords:   Pyrus pyrifolia, Pear disease, Graft-infection, fruit deformation, rough bark
Abstract:
A disease of Japanese pear which induces rough bark of shoots and deformation of fruits was found in the Okayama Prefecture in Japan. The symptoms are mainly wavy leaves, rough-surfaces with bark necroses of shoots and deformation of fruits. The symptoms on the shoots and fruits appeared within 2~3 years of Japanese pear cvs. Niitaka, Atago and Housui being top-grafted onto affected trees of the pear cv. Okusankichi. It appeared within 3~6 years on Okusankichi and Kousui which were worked onto pear rootstocks by a double grafting method. It became clear that the disease is graft-transmissible.
These results show that the disease of Japanese pear cv. Okusankichi in Okayama Pref. is the “sohi-byo” disease previously reported.
