Abstract:
Asian pear is a minor crop in New Zealand and Australia with areas of 150 hectares in New Zealand and 500 hectares in Australia. Most of the production in New Zealand is exported to the USA and Europe as fresh fruit whereas in Australia most of their production is sold on the local market. The main variety in New Zealand is Housui and in Australia, Nijisseiki. Research in New Zealand is focused on breeding new varieties and a floral bud disorder known as budjump. In Australia, research is concentrated on quality management, reducing skin marking, and production efficiency.
