PROSPECTS FOR THE ORIENTAL PEAR INDUSTRY AND RESEARCH TRENDS IN KOREA

Abstract:
The total area of Korea is 99,000 km2, and the population density is 463 persons per square kilometer. Agricultural population is 9% of the total population. Gross National Income (GNI) in 2000 was $9,628. The arable land in Korea is 1,899,000 ha (19.1% of total land area), of which 174,000 ha (9%) are planted with fruit trees. The area planted to pears is 26,000 ha (15% of the total fruit growing area) (MAF, 2000). Most of the pear grown in Korea is oriental pear, Pyrus pyrifolia and it has been grown since ancient times.
