Abstract:
‘Nansui’ is a late maturing and russet-skin cultivar of Japanese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai var. culta Nakai), released by Nanshin Agricultural Experiment Station in Nagano Prefecture.
This cultivar was bred from a cross combination of ‘Echigo’ and ‘Shinsui’ in 1973. The fruit quality was excellent, so this line was selected as a promising one in 1983. The local adaptability had been tested at the main producing areas of Japanese pear in Nagano Prefecture. ‘Nansui’ was registered as a new cultivar in 1990. ‘Nansui’ matures following ‘Housui’, from late September in southern area of Nagano Prefecture.
The fruit is oblate in shape and the skin color is yellowish brown.
The average fruit weight is about 400g.
The flesh is white, sweet and juicy.
The average percentage of Brix is more than 14o. The fruit storage life is long.
The fruit can be stored for one month at ambient temperature, three months at cold storage, respectively.
The tree is vigorous and strong in apical dominance similar to the pollen parent ‘Shinsui’. The flower buds are easily produced on the spur, so this cultivar is suggested to be more productive than ‘Kousui’ and ‘Shinsui’. The cultivar is susceptible to black spot disease (Alternaria alternata Japanese pear pathotype) and pear necrotic spot virus.
