Abstract:
Most Asian pears are green or brown with light flavor.
The new variety of pear ‘Golden Pearl’, selected from a crossing of Pyrus communis L. ‘Bartlett’ × P. bretschneideri Rehd. ‘Hongxiaoli’, is large, red and crisp with good flavor.
The fruit of Golden Pearl pear is large, average 224g.
It is short spindle, and the surface color is bright red on the top with a light-yellow ground color.
The stalk is 3.5cm long.
The calyx is persistent.
The core is small (2.2cm). The flesh is white with 12.4% soluble solid content, 9.89% total sugar, and 0.41% total acid.
Fruits ripen in late September in Xiongyue, Liaoning and can be eaten just after harvest.
After post-maturation, the flesh would get soft.
The vigor of young trees is strong.
Golden Pearl pear is resistant to pear scab (Venturia pirina Aderhold). It can be grown in the areas where P. communis L. and P. bretschneideri Rehd. have been cultivated.
