ISHS Acta Horticulturae 587: International Symposium on Asian Pears, Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Nijisseiki Pear

ASSESSMENT OF GENETIC RELATEDNESS AMONG LARGE-FRUITED PEAR CULTIVARS NATIVE TO EAST ASIA USING RAPD M ARKERS

Abstract:
A total of 92 pear accessions mainly native to East Asia were subjected to RAPD analysis to evaluate genetic variation and relationships among the accessions. Cultivars of P. communis were quite distinct from Asian pear cultivars. Cluster analysis identified five major groups. Chinese white pears clustered together with Chinese sand pears. The majority of Japanese pear cultivars fell into one major group, in which some accessions from Kochi Prefecture and one accession from the Kyushu region sub-clustered with some Chinese sand pears and one Korean cultivar. Cultivars from Kochi Prefecture also had high affinities to several Japanese pear cultivars native to other areas. These results infer that some local Japanese pear cultivar populations may have been derived from cultivars native to Kochi Prefecture, and that the latter and their progenitors may have been introduced from ancient China and Korea.
