ISHS Acta Horticulturae 586: IV International Symposium on Olive Growing

THE EFFECT OF CLONAL ROOTSTOCKS ON FROST TOLERANCE AND ON SOME ASPECTS OF PLANT BEHAVIOUR IN MORAIOLO AND S. FELICE OLIVE CULTIVARS

Authors:   G. Pannelli, S. Rosati, E. Rugini
Keywords:   Clonal rootstocks; frost tolerance; vegetative growth; yield efficiency.
Abstract:
The cultivars Moraiolo and San Felice, both sensitive to winter frost, are cultivated for their oil quality, contributing significantly to the quality of the olive oils in the Umbria Region. Plant vigour in "Moraiolo" is moderate, and the cultivar adapts well to drought and marginal soil, where it is able to guarantee a high yield and excellent oil quality. Plant vigour in "San Felice" is greater and the cultivar produces a high and consistent yield of both fruit and oil. Both cultivars were grafted on several genotypes displaying varying degrees of vigour and susceptibility to frost. During the third year of field trials, a winter frost (-8°C) occurred, allowing the selection of the grafting combination which best tolerated frost injury. During the 6th year of the trial, other agronomic characteristics such as plant vigour and yield, as ratios to trunk section and canopy volume, were evaluated in the by-member plants.
